Summer in Texas means longer days, backyard cookouts, vacations, and plenty of sunshine. It also means air conditioners working overtime. As temperatures rise, energy use often does too, but a few simple changes around the home can help keep your family comfortable while managing energy costs.

At Trinity Valley Electric Cooperative, we are always looking for ways to help members save energy and stay informed. Here are a few tips to help you stay cool this summer:

Raise the Temperature, Lower the Impact

Your air conditioner is often the largest contributor to summer energy use. Setting your thermostat just a few degrees higher while away from home can make a difference.

Try setting the thermostat around 78°F when home and awake, and raise it a few degrees when sleeping or away. A programmable or smart thermostat can help automate adjustments and improve efficiency.

Keep the Cool Air Inside

Texas sunshine is great for summer fun, but it can also warm your home quickly.

Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day, especially on south- and west-facing windows. This helps reduce heat gain and keeps your air conditioner from working harder than necessary.

Give Your HVAC System a Check-Up

A well-maintained system runs more efficiently.

Replace air filters regularly and keep outdoor units clear of grass, debris, and vegetation. Dirty filters can restrict airflow, making systems work harder and increasing energy use.

Let Ceiling Fans Do the Work

Ceiling fans can help circulate cool air and improve comfort.

During the summer, fans should rotate counterclockwise to push air downward and create a cooling effect. Remember: fans cool people, not rooms, so turn them off when you leave.

Save When You’re Away

Planning a summer getaway? Your home can save energy while you’re making memories.

Before heading out, consider these quick steps:

  • Adjust the thermostat a few degrees higher before leaving. No need to cool an empty home.
  • Turn off lights and electronics that won’t be used. Many devices continue drawing power even when not actively in use.
  • Unplug chargers and small appliances to reduce “phantom” energy use.
  • Run the dishwasher and laundry before leaving so appliances are not sitting full during your trip.
  • Close blinds and curtains to help block heat and reduce indoor temperatures.
  • Consider adjusting your water heater temperature or using vacation mode if available.

A few minutes of preparation before vacation can help reduce energy use while you are away and make returning home a little easier.

Small Changes Can Add Up

Summer memories should be about pool days, family gatherings, and time away, not worrying about energy use.

Small actions, from changing an air filter to adjusting the thermostat before vacation, can make a meaningful difference throughout the season.
