The holiday season often means packed cars, full houses, and busy schedules. Whether you are traveling to see loved ones, welcoming guests into your home, or heading out of town, a little planning can help keep everyone safe, comfortable, and energy efficient.

If You Are Traveling for the Holidays

Before hitting the road, take time to prepare your vehicle. Check tire pressure, fluids, lights, and windshield wipers to make sure everything is in good working order. Winter weather can be unpredictable, so pack an emergency kit with water, snacks, blankets, a flashlight, and a phone charger. Let someone know your travel plans and expected arrival time, especially if you are traveling long distances.

While driving, slow down and leave extra space between vehicles, particularly in rain, fog, or icy conditions. Always buckle up and make sure children are properly secured. Avoid distractions and take breaks on long trips to stay alert. Keeping your gas tank at least half full during winter travel is also a good precaution.

If You Have Guests Traveling to You

When friends or family are visiting, a few small steps can help keep everyone safe and comfortable. Make sure walkways, porches, and driveways are well lit and free of clutter to prevent slips and falls. If guests are bringing electronic devices, avoid overloading outlets and use power strips with built-in surge protection.

With extra people in your home, energy use may increase. Adjust your thermostat to a comfortable but efficient setting, and use ceiling fans to help circulate warm air. Encourage guests to turn off lights and electronics when not in use, and consider using LED holiday lights and timers to save energy while still enjoying seasonal decorations.

If You Are Leaving Your Home Unoccupied

If you plan to be away, take steps to keep your home safe while you are gone. Set your thermostat to a lower but safe temperature to prevent frozen pipes, usually no lower than 55 degrees. Unplug non-essential electronics to reduce energy use and protect against power surges.

Use timers for indoor and outdoor lights to give the appearance that someone is home. Secure doors and windows, and ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your property or collect mail and packages. Make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly before you leave.
